Mumbai : State Education Minister Ravindra Waikar on Tuesday directed the University of Mumbai to start a ‘commercial theatre’ stage to give a platform for budding artists and students passing out of Lok Kala Academy of the university, to continue the legacy of the state in the field of theatre.
Waikar was giving an address on Tuesday at the Fort campus of the University of Mumbai, on the occasion of centenary birth anniversary of Shahir Amar Shaikh, a patriotic artiste who strove hard for social revolution through propagating communism in the nation through the form of ballads and songs.
In the second half of the programme, Education Minister Vinod Tawde while unveiling the portrait of Shahir Amar Shaikh said that the state always supports art and culture. He said that the heritage and work of the Amar Shaikh should reach the next generation.
“Scores of people including Amar Shaikh made sacrifices for a united Maharashtra and their sacrifice is fruitful. In the future too, we will strive hard for a united Maharashtra,” Waikar said. On behalf of the government, he assured the university of financial assistance for construction of a theatre.
Lok Kala Academy has made films on the songs and ballads of Shahir Amar Shaikh. Waikar directed the acadmey to play these songs at the memorial of United Maharashtra at Dadar Shivaji Park.
