Mumbai : Within 24 hours of the burial of 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon, the politics to cash upon the sentiment of injustice, which prevails in scores of people who believe Memon was wrongly hanged, has begun. The Vice President of Samajwadi Party’s state unit Mohammed Farooq Ghosi has written a letter to party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav requesting him to nominate Memon’s widow Raheen Memon as a Rajya Sabha MP.

In the letter, Ghosi has mentioned that he finds Raheen helpless and there are several people in the country who are in the similar situation. Hence, the party should make her the Member of Parliament and make her the voice of the feeble Muslims in the country.

Speaking with FPJ, Ghosi said, “Raheen too was arrested and jailed, but was later released by the court as no evidence was found against her. Despite being innocent she was jailed. This is sheer injustice.”

Trying to sound politically correct, he added, “I accept the Supreme Court’s decision on Yakub Memon, but as an Indian he has the right contest elections or get nominated for Rajya Sabha. Also, it is my personal opinion and as a true socialist I conveyed to netaji what I had in my heart.”

When asked if he had approached the Memon family and is Raheen willing to take up the offer if the party decides to send her to the Upper House, Ghosi chose not to reply.

Distancing himself from Ghosi’s letter, party’s state president Abu Asim Azmi said, “I object to whatever Ghosi has written in the letter.”

Even party’s Muslim face in Uttar Pradesh and senior leader in Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s cabinet Azam Khan had hit out at the politicians criticizing Memon’s hanging. “Those supporting Yakub Memon are wrong and want to divide society,” Azam had said.
