Mumbai : The BMC has decided to set up CCTV cameras around the city’s nullahs in a bid to check corruption. Following the report submitted by special committee set up by BMC chief Ajoy Mehta which indicated corruption among nullah-desilting contractors, the BMC has been taking stringent measures to save face.
MNS chief in the BMC Sandeep Deshpande demanded the setting up of CCTV cameras during Wednesday’s standing committee meeting. Corporators have also demanded that the BMC should spend more money on increasing the width of the nullahs to prevent clogging of waste and resultant water-logging in the monsoon.
Moreover, part of the nullah-desilting work that is supposed to be completed post-monsoon is stuck in limbo after the BMC stopped all payments to contractors accused of corruption. Standing Committee members also demanded that the BMC should take immediate steps to clean nullahs and prevent further water logging.
The BMC has proposed to set aside over Rs 26.5 crore for construction to increase width of the nullahs in Mumbai. Also, it has set aside more than Rs 7.3 crore for waste removal and disposal and Rs 74.5 crore for desilting of nullahs.
Congress Corporator Pravin Chedda demanded that a special department should keep constant tabs on footage from CCTV cameras put up along nullahs.
