Mumbai: The Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) lost Yash, the royal Bengal male tiger, at the age of 12, on Tuesday around 5.45 pm. Tiger Yash was operated twice for a growth on the face, in last one year and had been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer.
Yash was born in SGNP in 2008 to Basanti and Palash. As reported by the pathologist from Bombay Veterinary College, Yash was suffering from an embryonal type Rhabdomyosarcoma. The Pathology Department of BVC conducted the post-mortem of Yash today. He had lost considerable amount of body weight, since he was last operated in March 2019.
Finally he succumbed to cancer related complications like progressive cachexia (loss of body condition) and multi organ failure. Dr Santosh Gaikwad, Taxidermist will be conducting taxidermy on Yash. The carcass were cremated to flames after the post mortem examination as per the prescribed protocol.
