Mumbai : A connecting bridge between two buildings at Swadeshi Market at Kalbadevi collapsed on Thursday, blocking the exit to the ground floor and trapping nine people inside.
The fire brigade and the BMC’s disaster management team, which rushed to the spot within half an hour, rescued all nine people and no casualties or injuries were reported.
The two adjacent buildings were two-storey and three-storey each, and as the connecting bridge between them collapsed, bringing down a wooden staircase with it, five people were stranded on the first floor of one building and four people were trapped inside a shop on the ground floor of the second building, as the exit was blocked. The building, reportedly, is over 100 years old.
The incident occurred around 5.15 pm on Thursday. On receiving a call, the fire brigade sent three fire engines and an ambulance to the spot. Sources in the fire control room said that the ambulance was sent as a precautionary measure, but was not used.
A search is on to ascertain that no one is trapped in the debris.
