Safety not the best policy for builders

Mira Road : The tragic death of a construction worker after falling off from the upper floors of an under construction high rise in Mira Road on Sunday has yet again exposed the blatant ignorance towards safety measures by builders to avoid such fatal mishaps.

The incident took place at around 11 am on Sunday in the Poonam Estate Cluster, a 20-storey under construction tower in Mira Road. The deceased identified as Dharmendra (full name not yet ascertained), a plumber, who apparently lost balance and came crashing on the podium from the upper floors. A native of Uttar Pradesh, Dharmendra (30) died on the spot. Although it is still not clear if the deceased was on-duty or it was day-off for him on Sunday, despite ongoing construction activity, safety nets were missing at the spot where he fell.

As of now, a case of accidental death has been registered at the Kashimira police station. “We are into the process of conducting a probe into the case and ascertain whether there was any negligence on part of the site supervisor or anybody else that resulted in Dharmendra’s death,” confirmed senior police inspector Anil Kadam.

There has been an alarming rise in death of workers pointing towards lack of safety harnesses and belts used on construction sites across the region. However, the mounting toll seems to have done little to improve safety practices.
