Mumbai : A weekend picnic at Lonavala turned into a nightmare for a Bandra-based family after two of its members were injured and one died when they were enjoying an outing at a dam near Khandeshwar, and a few rocks suddenly fell on them. An 11-year-old succumbed to his injuries, while a 13-year-old boy is fighting for his life in a hospital at Khandeshwar. The body of the deceased was brought back to Nirmal Nagar for his last rites.

According to the Nirmal Nagar police, the incident occurred on July 18 when the family had hired a car for a picnic in Lonavala. During their trip, the car broke down near Khandeshwar and they were about to return. But Manthan Singh, the injured boy, and Ajay Singh, the deceased child, did not want to return home, and convinced the elders to hire a rickshaw to carry on with the outing.

The police further said that when the family reached the dam near Khandeshwar, Ajay and Manthan, along with Ajay’s father, Dinesh Singh (35), went towards the dam to have play in its waterfall. And that’s when the rocks fell on them, without warning, causing severe injuries for them.

They were immediately taken to the Mahatma Gandhi hospital in Khandeshwar. Ajay succumbed to his injuries yesterday, while Manthan is in a critical condition. Dinesh is stable. Ajay’s body has been brought back to Nirmal Nagar in Bandra (east) for his last rites.
