Mumbai: Sentiments of anger and outrage were witnessed as the incident of the Ghatkopar road accident was discussed on Thursday evening in general body meeting of the BMC. NCP corporator Rakhee Jadhav, demanded the contractors of the roads should be held for criminal liability. A point of order (p/o) was raised by Jadhav for discussion on the increasing number of road accidents in Mumbai.

“The BMC administration has undertaken huge projects like coastal roads, however, they are failing to maintain our regular roads,” said Jadhav. Ravi Raja, the leader of Opposition from Congress, demanded criminal action against the contractors responsible for the pathetic conditions of the city roads. “Contractors are blacklisted whenever there is a tragic incident. However, the number of such accidents are on the rise. Henceforth, criminal liabilities should be fixed on these contractors,” demanded Raja. Sufiyan Vanu of Congress said, “More people have died due to road accidents than terror attacks in India, as reported by the ministry document.

It has become a city of accidents.” The opposition demanded to follow up on making Mumbai free of paver block. The demands made by the opposition were supported by the ruling Shiv Sena, as Vishakha Raut, the leader of the house of Sena, demanded criminal action instead of blacklisting a contractor. She also demanded a need for an institutionalised compensation policy in such incidents. “The city has witnessed number of tragic accidents due to the negligence of contractors. We, therefore, demand the administration to fix criminal liability on such contractors and request to draft a policy of compensation when such accidents occur,” she said.
