On This Day in History: July 12, 2000 – Landslide caused by heavy rains kills 67 people in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area

On this day, July 12, in the year 2000, 67 people were killed when a landslide occurred in Ghatkopar area of Mumbai due to heavy rains. Most of the victims were residents of slums. The landslide occurred on around 100 hutments of Chiragnagar-Azadnagar locality due to land erosion, caused by heavy rains in Mumbai during the Monsoon season.

Among the dead, there were 27 men, 15 women, and 15 children. It was one of the worst monsoon disasters to hit the city of Mumbai. Meteorological department revealed that more than 350 millimetres of rain fell in the suburbs of Mumbai in the 24-hour-period before the landslide.

Army and Navy teams were called to help the authorities for the rescue operations. The team looked for survivors in the mass of mud caused by the landslides. Other areas of Mumbai were also flooded so the Navy send three squads with life boats in flooded areas of Kurla, Santacruz and Andheri.

The quick response of fire brigade saved 54 lives who were treated at Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar and Lokmanya Tilak Municipalised General Hospital at Sion. The state government announced ex-gratia of Rs 25,000 to the next of the kin of those killed in the landslide and Rs. 10,000 to every injured.
