Injured men talk about panic inside compartments leading to some of the passengers jumping out of the slowly moving train

Mumbai : Six people were injured and rushed to BMC’s Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle after seven coaches of a Churchgate-bound train from Virar derailed on the western suburban line on Tuesday morning. Of the six injured people (five men and a woman), two were discharged from the hospital in the afternoon after receiving medications at the Out-patient Department (OPD). Meanwhile, the remaining four who had suffered arm and leg fractures along with minor injuries are still recuperating in the hospital. But their condition has been stated to be stable till the time of writing this report late on Tuesday.

The victims still admitted in the hospital stated that they were rushed to the nearby hospital by 12.30 on Tuesday afternoon by the railway officials and locals who were present at the spot. One of the victims, Ajay Mourya, 26-year-old from Nalasopara, was travelling to Dadar to reach his place of work when the accident took place.

“We had reached near Parle biscuit company when we saw smoke arising from the train’s upper portion. Following this, all passengers panicked and some were even trying to jump out of the train. People were literally pushing each other in the compartment so that they can get out of the train first. Like others, I was also trying to get out of the compartment when four to five people pushed me and I fell down in the compartment only, following which I sustained injuries.”

Meanwhile, the other victim from Andheri, Sonu Prajapati (24) who was heading to a market in Dadar said, “We didn’t knew what to do when we saw smoke and that the coaches were derailed. The only thing that was going on in our mind was that we immediately need to get out of the train. In the hustle, I got hurt and fell on the tracks wherein I injured my arm. Following this, the other passengers rushed me to hospital wherein we were provided aid.”

Dr Ramesh Chaturvedi, dean of Cooper Hospital said, “Six were brought to the hospital, of which two were treated on OPD basis as they had minor injuries. However, the remaining four are still recuperating as they had suffered fractures in arms and legs. We will see if they need to be operated depending upon their improvement in the condition.”
