With parts of Maharashtra receiving heavy to moderate rainfall, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued an 'orange' alert for Mumbai, Palghar and Thane for the next four days.

The IMD said Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. The 'orange' alert warning means authorities need to be in a state of total preparedness.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Mumbai woke up to a cloudy morning and incessant rainfall. The IMD in its 24-hour forecast has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in the city and suburbs. A high tide of 4.26 metres is expected at 12.17 pm in Mumbai today.

KS Hosalikar, head SID, Climate Research & Services, IMD Pune, said Mumbai and surrounding areas received light to moderate rains last night.

"As expected Mumbai & around received light to moderate rains last night as seen fig 1 & in 24hrs it recd widespread very hvy to Extremely hvy at isol places (fig 2) Today it could be little improved during day with likely picking of rains frm evening/early morning," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, IMD has issued a warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the Konkan region of Maharashtra between June 11 and 15.

On Wednesday, the first rains of year in Mumbai caused water-logging in various parts of the city, prompting the traffic police to shut four subways and forcing motorists to abandon their vehicles on roads.

The heavy downpour also disrupted local train services, which are running only for personnel engaged in health and other essential services, and are out of bound for general commuters in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While there were fewer vehicles on the city roads amid the downpour, motorcyclists and other two-wheeler riders were unable to manoeuvre their vehicles at some of the flooded places. The traffic police closed Milan, Khar, Andheri and Malad subways for motorists due to water-logging at these places.
