Mumbai: Mumbai witnessed its first pre-monsoon showers on Sunday evening, starting with a most bizarre accident in Chembur, when the slippery road claimed two lives.
A vehicular pile-up occurred on Sunday night at the Amar Mahal Junction signal. According to Tilak Nagar Police, around 11pm, the roads became slippery because of the slight drizzle, causing a bike to skid on the road. The driver of the car behind the biker braked hard, causing it to swerve and dash into the divider.
If that was not enough, the cement mixer behind this car tried to brake but too veered out of control and became a part of the stack-up.
Worse still, behind the mixer was a bus whose driver applied emergency brakes; the abrupt halt made the auto rickshaw in the rear dash into the bus and a speeding dumper behind the auto collided with it.
Such was the impact that the driver of the auto and one of the two passengers were killed on the spot.
According to Tilak Nagar Police, "The auto rickshaw was sandwiched between the bus and the mixer. The auto driver and the two women passengers were taken to Rajawadi hospital. Subhash Bhind, 55, the auto driver and Sufiana Ansari, 25, were declared dead on arrival, while the 55-year-old woman passenger Mona Mirza's condition is still said to be critical."
Soon after the accident, the mixer driver fled from the spot and the Tilak Nagar Police have registered a First Information Report under Indian Penal Code sections, causing death by negligence (304 A), rash driving (279) and causing grievous hurt (338). The police are on the lookout for the driver.
