The railway stations of low lying areas of Sion and Kurla in Mumbai face a big problem of water-logging during monsoon. But hopefully this time, the movement of trains will not suffer as Central Railway will lift tracks between Kurla and Sion by four to six inches. This will be done to battle the water-logging and flooding problems during rainy season.
Currently, 30 mm of rain water submerges the tracks at these two stations. The 4-kilomemter stretch is one of the most affected on the Central line during heavy rains. If the work of rasing the tracks is completed, the movement of trains will not be affected even if it rains 100 mm in 24 hours.
The work will start within a week and is bound to complete before June 10. The work has been made possible after three foot-over-bridges were demolished. Recently, FOBs Swadeshi Mills, Kasaiwada, and one near Sion station was dismantled. This has made possible raising of tracks possible as height of all other FOBs on this stretch leaves enough headspace for over-head equipment running underneath to be raised.
