Mumbai: The Mumbai University (MU) Kalina campus in Santacruz which has large tracts of open space and attractive for many proposed projects that can come up here. One such project has been proposed by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to build two new roads connecting to Bandra Kurla Complex to Vakola and Santacruz-Chembur Link Road.

Over 34,000 square metres of land from the University complex will be utilised for this project. In lieu of that land, MU will get transferable development rights which they can utilise in open market.

Apart from the road construction plans, MMRDA will also bring modern amenities and infrastructure on the MU campus. For which the authority has invited bidders to submit proposals for preparation of a detailed layout master plan and urban design guidelines for the 245 acres in Kalina campus.

An official from the MMRDA said, “Only when the plan is received from experts, it will be examined further and if found appropriate will be considered.” Earlier, the Kalina campus came under the jurisdiction of BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation, however, last year as per a government resolution, MMRDA was given the powers to undertake this responsibility.

The MU campus has hostels, laboratories, an auditorium, library and department buildings. “The development of the campus was a long pending demand. Now that we have floated a tender to appoint experts, we are hoping this demand will see some development.

The integrated infrastructure development will also attract students from foreign countries. The main aim is to provide best educational facilities,” said the official. The last date for submission of proposal showing bidders their interest in the project is Mar 19.
