Mumbai: A 28-year-old man, a biker, who was riding with his father, was allegedly killed by a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus in a hit-and-run accident on Saturday morning near Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road.
Reportedly, the BEST driver escaped from the spot after the accident. The victim, Rakesh Patil (28), succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital. The BEST bus driver was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act for causing death due to negligence and rash driving.
According to police, the incident occurred when the deceased, Rakesh was on his way to run an errand with his father, Nandalal (65) at 10.45am on Saturday. When the duo reached near Milind Nagar signal on Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), Nandalal got off the bike. At that time, a BEST bus driver, rammed into Rakesh’s motorcycle from behind, causing his death.
The BEST bus driver fled the spot without offering help, said locals. Rakesh’s father rushed his injured son to the hospital, where he was declared dead before arrival. Nandalal then registered a case and the bus driver was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act pertaining to causing death due to negligence (section 304A) and rash driving (section 279).
“The BEST bus driver has been identified and his statement has been recorded. Rakesh’s friends informed he was depressed and the incident might be a suicide. We are investigating the matter and further action will be taken accordingly,” said Navinchandra Reddy, deputy commissioner of police (zone 10). The BEST bus driver, has been called in for questioning. No arrests have been made so far, said police.
