Mumbai CSMT FOB collapse: Eyewitness accounts to political statements

At least six people were killed and over 30 injured after a portion of a foot over bridge (FOB) near the bustling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station in Mumbai collapsed on Thursday evening. A big slab of the FOB came crashing down at around 7.20 pm due to which several pedestrians were injured.

CM’S STATEMENT
Devendra Fadnavis tweeted: Pained to hear about the FOB incident near TOI building in Mumbai. Spoke to BMC Commissioner and Mumbai Police officials and instructed them to ensure speedy relief efforts in coordination with the Rail Ministry officials.

EYE-WITNESSES
A taxi driver, Mohammad Akhtar Ansari (39) travelling from Churchgate to Mahim was saved by a whisker after a part of the debris fell on his taxi.

However, both driver and the traveller are safe. Another eyewitness, Puran Ram, 30, was working in a snack corner near the foot-over-bridge. According to him, the incident took place around 7.30 pm and 4 to 5 of them just scraped through.

UNACCEPTABLE
“This is absolutely unacceptable. An FIR should be filed under IPC Section 302 against BMC officers responsible for this negligence,” said Milind Deora, Congress leader.

PROFILE OF DEAD
Ranjana Tambe was a nurse at GT Hospital. Zaid Shiraj Khan, 32, owned a male accessories shop in Ghatkopar. He was returning home after collecting goods for his shop and was on the bridge, when it collapsed. Khan was declared dead on arrival at St George Hospital.

INJURED TRIO
Among the 23 injured are Mohan Mitta, Abhijeet Manna and Rajesh Das. They are labourers who work in a nearby area. Rajesh was about to travel to Kolkata after learning his son was admitted in a hospital there. Mitta and Manna were going to drop him at CTS station when the bridge collapsed.

POLICE STATEMENT
Mumbai police will register a case of death due to negligence under Section 304 A of the IPC for those responsible for maintenance of  this bridge.

A case  might be registered at either at MRA or Azad Maidan police station. One segment of the bridge is under Azad Maidan police station while the side is under the jurisdiction of  MRA Marg police.  A case will be registered after rescue operations are over.
