Mumbai: An unidentified thief broke into a Jain temple in Sewri and stole valuables worth Rs 7.15 lakh, said the RAK Marg police, adding that they are hunting for the burglar with the help of CCTV footage.

The culprit sneaked into the Shree Shivri Jain Sangh temple, located on the third floor of the Moolraj Bhavan building, through a window and fled with various ornaments, silver crowns and Rs 5,000 cash.

The incident occurred between 8pm on Tuesday and 5.30 am on Wednesday, as per the complainant, Bipin Lalan, 57, a businessman and a member of the trust that manages the temple. The theft came to the light when priest Hitendra Singh opened the shrine for performing the morning rituals, but was shocked to see signs of a theft.

He immediately informed Jitendra Chheda, another trust member, and together, they inspected the temple and reviewed the CCTV footage. The duo found that the donation box had been broken open and the main wire connected to the surveillance system had been cut.

Based on Lalan’s complaint, the police registered a case of burglary against an unidentified person. CCTV footage from the temple premises and surrounding areas have been procured to identify and nab the burglar.
