Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai and north-Konkan on 'red alert' for extremely heavy to very heavy rains over the next 24 hours.
Senior IMD officials said the city will receive a day of intermittent rainfall with heavy showers in the adjoining suburbs for the next three to four days.
“Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at a few places in the districts of Raigad and Palghar, and at a few places in Mumbai and Thane,” said an IMD official.
Mumbai has been experiencing record-breaking monsoon rain this year. On July 2, it received the second highest quantum of rain for July over a 24-hour period since 1975.
“The city has recorded 53 per cent of its average July rainfall till 8.30am on Monday, with almost three weeks still to go,” the official added. The heavy downpour has been attributed to the cyclonic circulation persisting over south Gujarat and Maharashtra.
“Along with the cyclonic circulation, there is plenty of moisture that is getting pumped in from the Arabian Sea. Collectively, this is causing heavy to very heavy rainfall over the region.
This will continue over Konkan, Goa, and north Madhya Maharashtra till July 11,” said the IMD official. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the Arabian Sea, which will be very rough, with high waves and wind speeds touching 40-50 kmph till Friday.
