Every monsoon, Mumbai gets flooded. And with an eye to help people swiftly, on Thursday, the BMC commissioner Praveen Pardeshi told civic officials to be more active on Twitter to tackle grievances of people.
According to Hindustan Times, the BMC is also planning to have dedicated Twitter accounts to report potholes and waterlogging. On Thursday, BMC chief held a meeting on the usage of social media by the civic body in general, especially during monsoon. A BMC official told the leading, “Commissioner directed us to be active on Twitter, citing that it helps establish a personal connect with citizens who voice their concerns about civic problems on Twitter.” The BMC official told Hindustan Times, “The commissioner also told us that BMC does have a Twitter account, but it is not that active. We were told to get more active on Twitter especially during monsoon.”
Many times people tweet about their civic problems, especially during monsoon, but nobody replies to them. The BMC official further added that they have disaster management cell active on Twitter but it does not deal with problems like potholes or other problems relating to gardens or open spaces. In the meeting, it was decided that in coming months, all crucial departments like stormwater drains, roads that deals with potholes, gardens department dealing with open spaces will have their own Twitter accounts. The BMC chief has directed the civic officials from several departments to send one representative to sit in disaster management cell to deal with queries and tweets. These representatives will be called as coordination officers.
