Mumbai: 3 patients in clinic die after slab falls

Ulhasnagar: In a man inflicted tragedy in Ulhasnagar, three patients, who had come to a doctor’s clinic, lost their lives after the slab of the building collapsed. The deceased included a three year old girl and two women. A fourth person has sustained injuries. The incident took place at Ashirwad clinic situated on the ground floor of Memsaab building which is a ground plus five storied structure in Indira Gandhi Market. It is a 30-year-old building with ten flats.

The deceased were identified as Nitu Sajeda (60), Anita Mourya (30) and Priya Mourya (3). One of the injured, Dr Lalwani Rijhwani, has sustained a head injury. The other injured persons were — Hirakhem Chandani (80), Vandana Mourya (24) and Khushi Mourya (2). According to civic officials, tiling of the floor was on in the second floor residence of Mrs Motwani; incidentally, other residents had objected to the repair work.

No one was on the second floor when the incident happened. Suddenly, at 2.15 pm, a part of the second floor caved in; this resulted in the first floor slab crashing on the ground floor clinic. An Ulhasnagar fire officer said they received a call at around 2.50 pm after which rushed to the spot with three fire tenders. The team pulled out the three dead bodies and four injured persons from the debris.

Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation officials said that they had notified 252 dangerous buildings and 19 most dangerous buildings the city. Yuvraj Badhane, PRO of Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC), said, “We gave a structural audit notice to each building in Ulhasnagar six months ago. A structural engineer will visit the spot and carry out an audit of the building”. Fire Officer Balu Nekte said they had evacuated all residents of the ill-fated building and shifted them to a shelter home.
