MUMBAI: The annual garden exhibition of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), hosted by Veermata Jijabai Udyan began on Friday with a visual delight of 12 foot shehnai, an eight foot flute and an eight foot guitar. The theme for this year is, ‘Celebrating 150 years of Gandhi’ and this exhibition will be open to public till Sunday.
The highlight of the exhibition is a Gandhi charkha made of flowers, arranged according to the Indian tricolour. The exhibition has musical instruments like a tabla, sitar, veena and harmonium made of flowers. Besides floral display of musical instruments, the exhibition also has various fruit and flower plants, seasonal plants, plants with medical utility and varieties of cactus.
“Nearly 35, 000 people visited the exhibition on Friday. We are expecting the total footfall of over 1,00,000 over the weekend,” said Jitendra Pardeshi, superintendent of gardens department. The exhibition was visited by singer Shridhar Phadke, yesteryear actors Bhagyashree and Varsha Usgaonkar. The BMC has started this initiative since 2016 and themes in the past have varied from clean Mumbai, cartoons and aquatic animals.
