Mumbai: A woman and her son allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at their home in Narangi, Virar on Friday night. The bodies of Saraswati Chowgule, 42, and her son Vinay, 25, were found at their rental home in Sai Heritage Apartments on Saturday morning, police said.  All-rounder Vinay played underarm cricket for the local Saiba Cricket Club, winning many prizes and was affectionately known as ‘Dadu’. He worked for a private company. Saraswati was reportedly estranged from her husband, Prakash.

Investigations are underway but prima facie, it is suspected the duo died after consuming poison, burdened by financial obligations. “They ended their lives by consuming poison. Their neighbours found them lying motionless on the floor and alerted their relatives and police,” a police officer said. “They might have taken the extreme step due to their financial situation,” he added. Virar Police have registered a case of accidental death and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
