Mumbai : One of the major hurdles for the Dahisar-DN Nagar metro corridor was cleared after the Manjara Charitable Trust gave an in-principle nod to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s request to construct a Metro car depot on the land.
The 48-hectare land was selected by the government after environmentalists protested against the use of another plot covered by mangroves in Charkop and Mankhurd.
The plot was given by the state government to the Manjara Charitable Trust to run educational institutes, which was set up by late Congress leader and former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
“Manjara Trust has given an in-principle go-ahead for the depot in their plot,” confirmed UPS Madan, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA.
According to MMRDA officials, the area required for the depot is around 20 hectares.
Officials of MMRDA said that the urban development department would issue a notification declaring its intention to change the reservation on the plot at Charkop for the Metro car depot, allied uses and for commercial purposes.
The 18.6-km long, complex corridor linking northern suburb of Dahisar to DN Nagar will be implemented by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation for the MMRDA. The civil construction of the corridor will commence latest by March 2016 and is expected to be completed by March 2019.
“We are finalising the bid documents for the corridor and we expect to float them by mid-December,” Madan added.
The corridor will have 17 stations and is estimated to cost Rs 6,410 crore.
