Admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, aimed at providing free education to economically weaker sections of society, are set to commence next week in the state, a senior official from the Maharashtra Education Department informed The Free Press Journal on Thursday.

However, the deadline for RTE school registrations has been extended due to pending applications from some schools, caused by server-related technical issues. These issues are expected to be resolved within the week.

The department has assured that all pending registrations will be completed before the admission process begins. According to Sharad Gosavi, Director of Primary Education, Maharashtra, “it is important to let every school register. In the next few days, the registration of more schools will be updated on the portal, along with more vacant seats.”

As per the official RTE portal, over 8,500 schools across Maharashtra have registered under the Right to Education Act, offering more than 1 lakh seats for eligible students. In Mumbai alone, 325 schools have registered, providing 5,990 seats as of today.

The RTE Act ensures free education for students from economically weaker and disadvantaged groups from Classes I to VIII in English medium schools. The fees of these students are reimbursed to the respective schools by the Government. This year, the registration process for schools began on December 18 and the admission process for students is expected to commence in the coming days.
