Amid rising tensions between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, a new controversy has emerged over the reduction of security cover for leaders, particularly from the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction. The state government’s decision to downgrade Y-category security for several leaders has caused discontent within the camp.
The security reduction is not limited to the Shinde faction, as leaders from BJP and NCP have also been affected. Sources indicate that the move was based on a threat assessment review, leading to a decision to reduce security for those no longer facing a significant risk.
The state government recently conducted a comprehensive review of VIP security, resulting in the security downgrade for leaders across party lines. BJP leaders Ravindra Chavan and Pratap Chikhalikar are among those affected by the decision.
Shinde faction leaders, who were earlier granted Y-category security, have been hit the hardest. Previously, they were provided with police escorts and security personnel at their residences, but under the new guidelines, escort vehicles have been reduced, and security presence at their homes has been scaled down. Going forward, these leaders will only have a single security guard while traveling, which has led to frustration and strong reactions within the faction.
The enhanced security cover for Shinde faction leaders was initially introduced after the 2022 Shiv Sena split, when Eknath Shinde became the Chief Minister. At that time, security was strengthened due to concerns about potential threats to rebel MLAs. Despite criticism, the security remained in place for over two and a half years.
Now, with the recent downgrade, political tensions in Maharashtra have once again come to the forefront. The move has triggered speculation about escalating differences between Fadnavis and Shinde, adding another layer to the political friction within the ruling alliance.
