Maharashtra: Ex-mayor, 70 others detained for insulting Shivaji Maharaj

Ahmednagar: The former mayor Shripad Chhindam and 70 others were detained and were kept out of bounds from Ahmednagar for a day, for insulting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Chhindam’s brother Shrikant too is one of the accused. This restraining order was a part of the preventive measure taken after Chhindam’s episode in 2018.

Tauf khana police have detained 50, Kotwali police 10, Bhingar camp police detained 10 persons. Last year, during Shiv jayanti, Chhindam had called a Public Works Department official, Ashok Bidwe. During that time, Chhindam had used some cuss words against Chhatrapati Shivaji maharaj. The audio clip of Chhindam using abusive words went viral and Chhindam was criticised from all quarters.

After that incident, Chhindam was asked to remain out of bounds (from Ahmednagar). On Chhindam was arrested on February 16 and was jailed for a period. He was given conditional bail and he had disappeared to an undisclosed location. In his bail plea, Chhindam had said the entire episode was a political conspiracy. Chhindam was restrained from entering Ahmednagar for a fortnight, after that.
