Bhayandar: Eight gamblers including six women were arrested after a team from the Naya Nagar police station swooped down on an apartment in Mira Road on Friday evening. According to the police, working on a tip-off from an informant, a team under the instructions of Senior Police Inspector Kailash Barve raided the apartment-cum-den and arrested eight people including the owner, who were found to be indulged in placing monetary bets on card games.

Besides gambling material, cash amounting more than Rs 11,000 was seized during the raid. All the accused have been booked under the relevant sections of the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act. Though it was a private and a closed group and not a club as such, the police claimed to have been well within the law to bust a gambling group. With gamblers preferring flats in high profile areas in discreet residential neighbourhoods to conduct their nefarious hobbies, the gambling menace has become a serious concern for the Thane (rural) police. Further investigations into the case were on.
