Mumbai : About 80 local train services on the central line were affected when Indrayani Express was stuck for an hour after smoke started emanating from the locomotive engine near Diva at 6.35 am.
The engine driver halted the train immediately. Some railway sources said there was a minor fire in the equipment room of the engine which was soon brought under control. However, a railway official denied this.
Chief PRO of CR, Narendra Patil said, “There was overheating of the compressor in the engine which caused the smoke. However, the tracks were cleared immediately and four services had to be cancelled because of it.”
The express remained stuck on the fast line down between Diva and Dombivali for about an hour until another locomotive reached the spot from Kalyan car shed to replace the engine. About 80 services were running late by 15 to 20 minutes because of this.
The railway official maintained that the services were normalised soon after the faulty engine was replaced. An official from CR added, “The engine from the Kalyan yard was rushed to the spot which replaced the engine and the train departed within an hour.”
