Mumbai : A major fire broke out at the basement of Bata Showroom in S V Road at Malad West on late Tuesday night. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident. Following the incident, eight fire engines, six water tankers and two ambulances were rushed to the spot for cooling operations. However, no casualties were reported. Chief Fire Officer P S Rahangdale informed that the cause of the fire is still unknown and the investigation is underway.
The Bata showroom (3500 sq ft area) is a two-floored structure with a basement and a ground. Around 25,000 pairs of shoes were stored in the basement when the fire had broken out, informed a fire officer. The fire brigade had received a first call on 10.47 pm on Tuesday night following the two calls which were made at 11 and 11.06 pm.
The fire personnels faced huge problems while dousing the fire as there was no ventilation and easy access to the basement. To bring the fire under control, six water jets and more than 65 breathing apparatus were used. It took hours for the fire officials to douse the fire; however, the fire was brought under control post-midnight.
Owing to the fire, there was heavy traffic jam at S V Road which led to lot of inconvenience to commuters and two-wheelers on Tuesday night.
Chief Fire Officer P S Rahangdale said, “We need to do a detailed study to understand the cause of the fire and following which we have started our full-fledged investigation. Once the investigation is completed, we can comment on it.”
