Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has decided to set up a special committee for investigating the Dr Payal Tadvi suicide case. Senior official said the committee will probe the case in detail and submit the report within five days to the state government.
The order of forming special committee was issued on Tuesday which states, “It has been alleged that Dr Payal had committed suicide due to the ragging and tormenting castiest slurs by the seniors. And considering the gravity of the incident, the committee will probe the case in details.”
This comes after Payal’s husband Dr Salman and her mother demanded to dissolve the old committee and form new committee comprising DMER joint director Dr Prakash Wakode, Dr. Bachi T Hathiram, Dr Kalidas Chavahan MUHS register and JJ Hospital dean Dr Ajay Chandanwale to investigate the matter.
Whereas, old committee 3-member committee comprising of Dr Tatyarao Lahane, Director of DMER, Dr Hemant Deshmukh, Dean of KEM hospital and Dr Dileep Mhaiskar, Vice Chancellor of Maharashtra Health Science University.
Dr Tadvi—a native of Jalgaon, had completed her MBBS from Miraj Government Medical College and had served as a medical officer at a Primary Helathcare Center in Jalgaon. She was the only one from her tribal community in the village to complete MBBS and was aspiring to become MD Gynaecology.
The anti-ragging report submitted to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences on Tuesday (MUHS). Dr Kalidas Chavan, registrar, MUHS, said a five member committee of senior professors from MUHS, will analyse the report and finalise the quantum of punishment against the accused.
“Head of the gynaecology department (Dr S D Shirodkar) has already been transferred and a suspension notice is served to the head of unit (Dr Yi Ching Ling) for their role in the case. Our committee will study the report and take appropriate action against the accused within two days,” said Dr Chavan.
