Bhayandar : As expected, NCP corporator Catlyn Pereira was elected Mayor of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) in the first meeting of the general body held on Tuesday, with the NCP and Congress forging a post-poll alliance. The Congress also managed to get its official candidate Noor Jahan Hussain elected as Deputy Mayor.

Maintaining their dominance over the MBMC, NCP legislator Gilbert Mendonca and former Congress MLC Muzaffar Hussain ensured that their kin (Catlyn is Mendonca’s daughter while Noor Jahan is Hussain’s mother) were elected to the top posts with a comfortable margin. Pereira polled 50 votes, defeating Shiv Sena’s Prabhakar Mhatre, who secured 43 votes in the 93-member body. Hussain was elected deputy mayor, defeating BJP corporator, Sharad Patil with a similar margin. At the time of going to polls, the NCP had 26 seats while the Congress was with 19 seats. Though the combination was two short of the magic figure of 47, Mendonca managed to muster the required number with the support of an independent and a MNS corporator.
Earlier in the day, the Mayoral aspirants Narendra Mehta (BJP) and Raju Bhoir (BVA) withdrew their nominations hinting at an apparent victory for Catlyn, who became the fifth mayor of the Mira Bhayandar civic body.
“It is not my victory, it is the victory of the masses. I promise to work round the clock towards the all round development of the twin-city and welfare of the common man,” Catlyn said. The post-poll alliance of NCP and Congress ensured a straight contest between the NCP-Congress combine candidates and saffron alliance candidates for the mayoral polls.
