Mumbai : Students studying in BMC schools will now get free BEST bus passes to travel between their homes and the schools. This proposal was passed in a meeting of group leaders in the BMC on Monday. The BMC will bear the cost incurred for passes and will pay an equivalent sum to the BEST.

It is considered that students who study in municipal corporation run schools usually come from low income families which are struggling to make ends meet. Free bus passes are meant to make commuting cheaper for students and hence encourage attendance in schools.

This proposal was tabled in the BEST committee meeting last week and was passed unanimously before it came to the BMC for its approval.

On the other hand, corporators who have been issued free BEST bus passes but who do not use them will have to hand them over to the BEST and forgo the privilege. This proposal was also passed in the group leaders meeting on Monday.
