Mumbai : The BMC has been conducting inspections of building in the C ward for any illegal and hazardous, inflammatory objects since the Gokul Niwas Fire in Kalbadevi that claimed the lives of four fire brigade officers.
The BMC has formed teams of experts from 10 different departments like the licence department, the encroachments’ department, the estate department which conduct field visits. It has come to light that inflammatory substances have been found in almost all of the 600 building inspected by the BMC in C ward so far.
There are 5,800 such buildings to be inspected in this ward out of which 5,100 are over 100 years old. A senior municipal officer said, “We have found inflammatory substances like lighters, gas cylinders, dirty chimneys illegally kept in most buildings.
Residents are found to run businesses in a residential complex which is not equipped to handle such a large scale of production.” The official informed that notices have been sent to all the buildings and action is awaited in case they do not comply.
