Mumbai : Even though the BMC’s standing committee on Wednesday approved the renovation of the Deonar slaughterhouse in preparation for the upcoming Bakra Eid, the issue found the BMC’s two ruling parties divided in opinion.
Whereas on the one hand the leader of the BJP in the BMC, Manoj Kotak, opposed the proposal, leader of the house and Shiv Sena corporator Trushna Vishwasrao wanted it passed.
However, along with approving the renovation work to increase the slaughterhouse’s capacity, the committee decided to shut down all other illegal slaughterhouses in the city, based on demands from across party lines.
Kotak opposed the decision and demanded that the standing committee conduct a site visit and inspect the condition of the place. He said that the BMC spends crores of rupees on the shed in Deonar every year even though it is making losses. He asked for the renovation work to be put on hold until an audit is conducted.
However, Vishwasrao, MNS’s Sandeep Deshpande and Congress’s Devendra Amberkar supported the proposal to protect religious sentiments. Vishwasrao said, “This is a very sensitive issue and being in the government, we must back the interests of the minorities.”
