Baramati: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar passed away on Wednesday, January 28, following a plane crash near the Baramati airport in the Pune district. Pawar had taken off from Mumbai in the morning to address four rallies in the day in Pune district for the February 5 zilla parishad elections. His last rites will be performed with full state honours tomorrow, January 29.
He was travelling on a small chartered plane that took off from Mumbai at around 8 am, which encountered difficulties while attempting to land. The plane crashed at Baramati, killing all five people on board. Currently, the exact cause of the crash is under investigation.
Ajit Pawar's Funeral Details
The funeral will take place tomorrow at Baramati's Vidya Pratishthan Maidan at 11 am. While speaking to news agency ANI, Kiran, Trustee of Vidya Pratishthan, said, "The mortal remains of Ajit Pawar will be kept at Vidya Pratishthan ground for the public to pay their last respects today. The last rites will be conducted tomorrow at 11 am." A huge crowd gathered at Vidya Pratishthan to pay their last respects to the late NCP leader Ajit Pawar.
PM Modi, Amit Shah likely to attend
Family members of the late leader and party supporters will be part of the last rites. Several political leaders, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Governor Acharya Devvrat, NCP leaders Nawab Malik and Zeeshan Siddique, who have already reached Baramati to pay their last respects, are also expected to attend the funeral.
Moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are also expected to attend the last rites on January 29. Leaders cutting across the political spectrum will be present, the Nationalist Congress Party said.
Three-day state mourning
Moreover, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis announced a state holiday and three days of mourning following the demise of Ajit Pawar. During the three-day mourning period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings across Maharashtra where it is regularly hoisted. No government entertainment programmes will be organised during this period. All state government offices across Maharashtra will remain closed today.
Schools Closed Till January 30
The schools in Maharashtra will remain closed till January 30 as the state is observing a period of mourning. The closure of schools is to enable students, teachers, and the entire community to observe the period of mourning and participate in the mourning activities.
Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar was the longest-serving Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra non-consecutively. He served in the position for six terms within various governments. He had worked as deputy chief minister in the cabinets of Prithviraj Chavan, Devendra Fadnavis, Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde. He is survived by his wife, Sunetra Pawar and two sons, Jay and Parth Pawar.
