Ujjain: Pall of gloom descends as 12 of family killed in van-suv collision

Ujjain: Twelve members of a family, including three minors, were killed and one seriously injured when their van collided head-on with a SUV at Ramgarh Phanta on Unhel Road on Monday late night. The deceased included four women. According to information, the accident took place around 11.30 pm on Monday at Ramgarh Phanta area when the victims, 10 of them residents of Ujjain, were returning home after attending a marriage function in Nagda city.

Their vehicle collided head-on with a speeding sports utility vehicle (SUV), killing 12 passengers of the van on the spot. The seriously injured driver of the SUV was referred to a hospital in Indore for treatment. After conducting post-mortem, the bodies were handed over to their relatives. Senior officials and peoples’ representatives visited the accident spot and the homes of deceased.

As per information, Arjun, son of Laxminarayan Kayat, secretary of BJP Kartik Chowk Mandal, along with 11 family members and relatives were returning from Nagda after attending a marriage function in a Maruti van. At around 11.30 pm their van (MP 04 BC 1154) collided head-on with a speeding SUV (MP 13 CC 4123) near Ramgarh Phanta, Unhel Road killing all the occupants of the van on the spot. After collision the van overturned. Driver of the SUV Vipin, son of Mishrilal, received serious injury and his friend Vijay escaped with minor injury.

The deceased were identified as Arjun Kayat (48), his wife Rajubai (45), their son Shubham (20) and daughter Anjali (18) along with relatives Kuldeepak Kayat (25), his sister Chanchal (22), Teejabai Solanki (50), Dharmendra Kayat (38), his daughter Saloni (12), Radhika Sanvare (7) (all residents of Ujjain) and Kashish (2) daughter of Rahul and her mother Ravina (22) (both residents of Barnagar). Vipin, a resident of Nagda, who sustained multiple injuries was referred to a Indore hospital.

Five ambulances were dispatched from district hospital soon after getting information which took all 12 bodies to the hospital for post-mortem. CSP along with TI of three police stations and Bhairavgarh police reached at the accident spot. CSP NS Rawat informed that driver Vipin, a resident of Prakash Nagar, Nagda and his friend Vijay came to drop someone in Ujjain and were returning to Nagda when the accident took place. When police talked with SUV owner Chetan Gurjar, he was unaware about the reason of Vipin’s trip of Ujjain.

MLA Paras Jain, divisional commissioner Ajit Kumar and collector Shashank Mishra visited the district hospital and expressed their grief and support to family of deceased persons. Elder brother of Arjun Kayat asked the officials to take measures of widen the road at Ramgarh Phanta to avert such accidents in future.
