Ujjain: Three new feathers were added in Ujjain division’s cap on Wednesday with Ujjain, Nagda (both Ujjain district) and Dewas being adjudged among 20 top clean cities under the Swachh Bharat Mission (urban). While Ujjain got fourth place in ‘Swachh Survekshan-2019’, Dewas and Nagda secured 10th and 18th national ranking, respectively, among 20 top cities of the country.
More significantly, Ujjain bagged first position in ‘Cleanest Medium City’ (population category 3 lakh to 10 lakh). The Mahakal City was selected for this award due to its innovative efforts in waste management and recycling along with public participation and public awareness campaign round-the-year.
These awards were presented by President Ramnath Kovind during a ceremony organised at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Mayor Meena Jonwal, Ujjain Municipal Corporation Commissioner Pratibha Pal, Leader of Opposition Rajendra Vasishtha and ex-Collector Manish Singh (who is presently posted as Swachh Bharat Mission director) received the awards.
It was for the first time that Ujjain jumped to fourth position in national ranking. It had stood at 17th and 12th position in the survey in 2018 and 2017’, respectively.
In the last three years, BJP-led Ujjain Municipal Corporation saw three commissioners (all IAS officers). On her part Mayor worked to ensure that the city made it to the list of first five clean cities of the country. However, it was the dedicated efforts and administration of commissioner that brought laurels the city to stride to such a national recognition.
