Ujjain: Encroachments in Narsing Ghat colony area were razed on Tuesday by Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC). The team of officials reached at the area and amid ruckus created by the residents of the area razed the encroachments. Women in the area resisted the officials under whom the removal was being done. According to reports the government constructed apartments in the area were surrounded by illegal constructions, hence the civic body demolished them.
Sources told that government had allotted 36 houses to 43 poor families of the area under government scheme, but the instead of living in the allotted houses they rented their houses to tenants and encroached the government land adjacent to the apartments and constructed houses. The UMC had issued notices to the slum dwellers but they did not vacate the government land.
The UMC razed 36 such encroachments with the help of 3 JCB machines, 4 dumpers, and 7 tractor trolleys under the police protection. According to municipal commissioner Pratibha Pal the encroachments were obstructing the important school project of the civic body.
