Indore: In sudden changes of events, PMB Gujarati Commerce College on Monday suspended the student, who lodged a ragging complaint with University Grants Commission (UGC), citing the student had lodged a false compliant.
“College student Ayush Agrawal has been suspended for 10 days,” college principal Rajendra Jain said in a report sent to the Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV).
Jain said that Ayush had lodged a ragging complaint with the UGC which was found false in an inquiry conducted by the college’s anti-ragging committee (ARC).
“Ayush has been suspended for the false compliant so that others get a lesson that false complaints could invite stern action against them,” Jain said.
The action against BCom first year student Ayush was taken a day after UGC had out-rightly rejected the inquiry report of the college’s ARC which found an alleged ragging case a mere ‘brawl’ between two students.
In its report to UGC, the college had claimed that the ARC had observed it was not ragging but a brawl between some current and ex-students.
In the same report, the college had also admitted that one senior student Aditya Mehta was also involved in the fight. Ayush had named Aditya and one ex-student Kailash Verma in his compliant.
The college had stated in the report that the fight had taken place outside the campus so it did not take any action in the matter. It also informed the UGC that the complainant and the accused had reached a compromise in the matter.
Rejecting the college’s report, the UGC had pulled up the college for not lodging a police compliant in the matter and accepting compromise between the accused and the victim.
The UGC had also stated that if the complainant had misled anti-ragging helpline, with which the complaint was filed, action should have been taken against it.
“Following the suggestion by the UGC, the college took action against the complainant. It also lodged a complaint with police into the matter,” said dean of student welfare at DAVV, LK Tripathi.
Tripathi, however, stated that they had sought to know from the college what action had been taken against the accused student.
“Action taken against the accused student, if any, has not been conveyed to us as yet,” the DSW said.
The college suspended the complainant on the basis of statement filed by him before the probe committee. In his statement to the ARC, the complainant Ayush stated that he had a fight with some senior students and in moment of heat, he lodged the complaint of ragging against the seniors. He maintained that it actually was not ragging but a mere ‘brawl’. Sources however claimed that the UGC did not accept such confessions anticipating they could have been given under pressure. Notably, it was the reason that the ragging complaint was rejected.
Indore: Despite strict measures in place, Madhya Pradesh has taken a lead in ragging cases in the country this year leaving behind Uttar Pradesh which stood first last year. Data with UGC revealed that MP witnessed as many as 13 ragging cases in January month followed by UP (9) and Maharashtra (6). Last year, UGC received 143 ragging complaints from UP followed by 100 from MP. This year, the MP has left behind UP in the January figures. Total number of complaints filed with the UGC so far stands at 62.
