Indore : To tighten noose around producers of meat and poultry products, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued draft notification recently. The step has been taken by the regulatory body following complaints from various NGOs and consumer organizations.
In the notification sets standards for meat and poultry products along with fixing residue limits of various veterinary drugs including antibiotics in meat and poultry products in respect of animal-based organic food products.
Senior Food Safety Officer Manish Swami said that after getting various complaints from the NGOs and others, the FSSAI issued the notification to put a check on the practices of the producers. He said that the authority formulated draft regulations which will come into effect after getting objections from the stakeholders till October.
“The NGOs have lodged a complaint that meat producing animals/poultry birds are fed with food containing meat including internal organs, blood meal and tissues of bovine materials. The NGOs have also raised concern over presence of veterinary drugs including antibiotics and growth promoters in diiary and poultry feed,” he said.
Drug licensing authorities will play a major role in taking action against the violators while the Food Safety Officer will ensure implementation of norms under the Act.
