Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the violence that took place in Howrah, Hooghly and Dalkhola in South Dinajpur during the Ram Navami celebrations.
HC asks state police to hand over case to NIA
A bench led by Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Justice TS Sivagnanam asked the state police to hand over the case papers, CCTV footage and other records relating to these cases to the central government within two weeks so that the NIA can start its probe.
It may be recalled that Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) at High Court demanding NIA probe into the violence that injured several people including police personnel.
Guardian of Constitution instilled confidence in public: Suvendu after court ruling
Following the verdict of Calcutta High Court, BJP leader Adhikari called the court as ‘the Guardian of Constitution’.
“The Guardian of the Constitution instilled confidence in the public once again by directing @NIA_India probe into the attacks and disturbances concerning the Ram Nabami processions in West Bengal. The Hon’ble High Court at Calcutta has once again pointed out the mischief of the State Government in their attempt to suppress facts for avoiding investigation by the NIA. I welcome the historic decision of the Hon’ble High Court at Calcutta. Let your faith be bigger than your fear. "Jai Sri Ram",” tweeted Adhikari.
Taking to Twitter, Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Kunal Ghosh in Bengali wrote, “RamNavami NIA. Central agency protects the BJP. Those who came from Munger are relaxed. The plot of BJP and center is to create communal tension first and then to create a platform for NIA to enter. NIA is not seen in BJP ruled states.”
