Tamil Nadu to continue 69 percent quota in medical college admissions

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has offered a 25 per cent increase in the number of medical seats for states that adopt the 10 per cent quota for economically weaker sections (EWS).

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Tuesday said the government will continue with the existing 69 per cent reservation (50 per cent for Backward Classes and 19 per cent for Scheduled Castes) in medical college admissions.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has offered a 25 per cent increase in the number of medical seats for states that adopt the 10 per cent quota for economically weaker sections (EWS).

It had asked the states to reply to the offer before June 28. Speaking in the Assembly on the issue, Palaniswami said a decision will be taken after discussions with political parties. He asserted that his government will not take a unilateral decision.
