Mumbai: The Government Railway Police (GRP) has stepped up in the wake of terror attack in Sri Lanka on April 21, which killed at least 253 (death toll revised down from 359 by Sri Lankan authorities) and wounded around 500.
Talking about the security concerns, GRP assistant commissioner Mahindra Chavan told Hindustan Times, “A security review of all stations has been going on. We have asked officers to patrol all entry-exit points of stations and secluded spots near the tracks and railway yards.” Sources further added that all the GRP Senior inspectors from central line (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Karjat, Kasara and Panvel) and western line (Churchgate to Dahanu) have been alerted to conduct inspections at vulnerable spots and they have been provided the authority to vacant buildings and strengthen the security patrolling throughout the city.
GRP officers have also been ordered to monitor all the suspicious activities and conduct surprise checkings of dubious bags and compartments. “We’ve asked our field officers to take adequate precautionary measures,” said Manjunath Shinge, spokesperson, Mumbai Police.
