IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IISc, Bengaluru, make it to top 200 in QS World University Rankings 2022

Three educational institutions of higher learning -- the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay), IIT Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru -- have made it to the top 200 in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2022. IISc, Bengaluru, which has been ranked the world’s top research university, achieving a perfect score of 100/100 for this metric.

As per the 18th edition of the QS World University Rankings 2022, IIT Bombay secured the 177th position followed by IIT Delhi at 185 and IISc Bengaluru at 186 in the overall university rankings globally. Though IIT Bombay dipped five places this year to 177 from its 2021 rank of 172, it is India's top-ranked institution for the fourth consecutive year at the QS World University Rankings.


For the QS World University Rankings, institutions and universities were judged on six indicators -- academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty/student ratio, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.

According to the QS statement, Indian universities have improved their performance on academic reputation metric and research impact, but continue to struggle on the teaching capacity metric. No Indian university ranks among the top 250 for faculty-student ratio.

Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US, secured the number one position in the QS World University Rankings 2022. This was followed by the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, which secured the second place; Stanford University, US, and the University of Cambridge, UK, shared the third spot; and Harvard University, US, was at the fifth place.
