Yavatmal : Unable to repay the mounting debts, a farmer couple from Devnalah village in Kalamb tehsil in the district committed suicide by consuming poison, police informed on Friday. They had consumed poison last week. While the farmer Mohan Shankar Rathod (45) died yesterday, the farmer’s wife Sheelabai (38) died on Tuesday, police said. Kalamb police have registered a case of accidental death and launched an investigation into the case.

The couple are survived by two sons, who are now in the custody of their grandmother Gauribai. According to police, Mohan had taken a loan of Rs 40,000 from a nationalised bank. However, since he could not repay the loan, he had become a defaulter and other banks refused to grant further loan to him. His wife had borrowed Rs 60,000 from a self help group to help him.

“They consumed poison together. When the neighbourers came to know about it, they rushed the couple to hospital,” police said.          The Revenue department team visited the victims’ house and conducted a spot panchnama, a government official said. PTI
