Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has alleged that the Congress wanted to grab the Indu Mill land, where the memorial of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar is to be built. He said it was the Congress which had given assurances that it will build the memorial and even mentioned it in the election manifesto in 2009.

Fadnavis claimed, “The Congress had built several memorials of ‘party leaders’ but they had reasons for not making the memorial of ‘the father of the Constitution’. He alleged that the Congress wanted to grab the land of Indu mill meant for the memorial. “The land was allotted within three days by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after BJP government came to power at the Centre,” said Fadnavis.

“The cost of the land is Rs 3,600 crore and it is in possession of the State. The memorial will be completed by 2020,” he promised. Meanwhile, Sachin Sawant, Congress spokesperson, said, “Fadnavis is not only fooling people, but is also lying. The principal approval to the memorial was received during the erstwhile Congress government in the state and at the Centre.” Sawant added that the BJP invoked the memorial for the purpose of election only. “In Bihar, Modi had performed bhumi poojan of Dr Ambedkar memorial three years ago, but there has been no progress on the memorial,” Sawant alleged
