Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) filed application in the Supreme Court seeking stay of the Citizenship Amendment Rules 2024 on Tuesday. IUML sought an urgent stay of the implementation of the CAA.
The plea demanding urgent hearing from IUML comes a day after the Centre notified the rules for the implementation of the CAA. Parliament had passed the law in 2019.
In its petition to the apex court, IUML has stated that the CAA is "unconstitutional and discriminatory", particularly against Muslims.
With the Lok Sabha nearing, the BJP-ruled Centre's decision to initiate the process of granting citizenship under the CAA has sparked controversy surrounding the act.
After the contentious Act received clearance from Parliament, the country witnessed widespread protests against it.
Notably, in Delhi's Shahin Bagh, women belonging to the Muslim community protested for more than 100 days. These women inspired similar demonstrations across the country.
CAA notification
Despite facing opposition and protests, the Centre proceeded with the implementation of the CAA on Monday. As per a gazette notification, the rules were immediately put into effect.
Under the newly implemented regulations, the Narendra Modi government intends to confer Indian nationality upon persecuted non-Muslim migrants from neighbouring countries, which include Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians. This step is in line with the Centre's objective to offer sanctuary to minorities experiencing religious persecution in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
