In its first legislative business as a part of the Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah would be tabling the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Amendment Bill in today’s session of Lok Sabha. The cabinet had already approved the 'The Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019 back on February 28 and secured a green signal from the President Ram Nath Kovind.

The bill would put in place 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections in J&K along with amendments in the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Act, 2004 that would bring them at par with the people living in areas near the actual Line of Control.

The move is aimed at providing job opportunities to the youth of J&K belonging to any religion or caste by reserving state government jobs for them. The 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections was introduced in rest of the country through the 103rd Constitution Amendment in January 2019.

In the race to elections, Shah had vowed to scrap Article 370 of the constitution of India which gives autonomous status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
