Puducherry: Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, who made a surprise visit of the school at Manavely here where he had studied, expressed shock over lack of basic amenities at his alma mater and directed the authorities to take remedial steps.

Visiting Thanthai Periyar Government Higher Secondary School, accompanied by Education Minister R Kamalakannan and local MLA R K R Anandaraman, he inspected the kitchen, held discussions with the students and also took note of the lack of compound wall around the school building, which had led to the premises being misused by anti-social elements.

He told reporters that he was “really shocked” to see the lack of basic facilities at his alma mater. The kitchen was using diesel operated ovens to prepare noon meal for students.

“I have asked the school authorities to use cooking gas and improve the quality of food,” he said.

With the government giving priority to education and healthcare, there could be no defence on part of the authorities to shirk responsibility in providing quality education and good environment, he said.

The compound wall should be constructed to ensure that there was no intrusion of outsiders into the premises, Narayanasamy said.

Earlier, he visited the hostel for the students of Adi Dravidar community along with the Welfare Minister M Kandasamy.
