Chandigarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said here on Friday that he was taking the oppositions’ disruption of parliament to the people so that they can decide who is trying to create obstacles in the country’s development. Without naming anyone, the prime minister said that the disruptions were due to the ego of some people.
“You have seen in last few days the happenings in the Lok Sabha. People of this country will never forgive political parties for their conduct in parliament. Some people, due to their ego, did not let the parliament function. This is most unfortunate,” Modi said while addressing a public rally.
The Lok Sabha was disrupted by slogan-shouting MPs of the opposition Congress party last month forcing the government to keep key bills, including the one on Good and Services Tax (GST), on hold.
“We are running the government to take the country forward and have development. You have given us the clear majority to run the government. Without bothering for 400 MPs in Lok Sabha, 40 people (MPs) created obstacles in the development of this country. This was an insult to the democracy in this country,” a visibly upset Modi said.
“I have come here to say that the Jan Sabha (people’s parliament) is bigger than the Lok Sabha. I am taking my Lok Sabha case to the Jan Sabha of people,” he said. The prime minister asked people to question their MPs whom they had elected.
“They (MPs) have been elected by you. They should go and discuss issues in the parliament. But there are people who are not ready to accept decorum and rules of democracy. “There is need to make people aware about democracy. MPs should be pressurised to discuss issues in parliament,” the prime minister said.
Modi said that his government need not be given credit for the recent decision on One rank One pension for ex-servicemen. “Don’t give credit of OROP to this government. Give the credit to the poor and common people of this country. Nothing can give more pride than this,” Modi said.
“The previous government sanctioned only Rs.500 crore for OROP. After we discussed, the amount came to was Rs.10,000 crore. For a country like India, this amount is not less. But it is small when seen in light of the sacrifices made by our soldiers,” he said.
